This stunning tree is a great addition to any garden planting, bringing bright flowers that strike vivid contrast with its stunning dark foliage. ![]() Unlike many Prunus this dark beauty will tolerate very severe pruning, making it easy to maintain in smaller gardens. It is an extremely tough tree and will tolerate most soil conditions, thriving particularly in well draining soils. It’s leaves, which are oval, with a serrated but soft edge, are about 2 inches long and a beautiful reddish-purple color. This tree was introduced in the early 1900s and has established itself as a great favourite for urban planting. The Purple Leaf Sand Cherry is a medium-sized shrub that can also be trained into a small tree. ![]() These hold their color all through summer. Prunus cerasifera Nigra is a small to medium sized tree which develops a rounded crown at maturity. The Purple-leaf Sand Cherry is a classic medium-sized deciduous shrub with striking reddish-purple leaves. It also has distinctively dark brown bark and stems which looks wonderful against the dark foliage. Technically, this is a fruiting variety and as such has been known to produce small juicy red plums some years, although Prunus cerasifera Nigra is not a species to be relied upon to actually fruit. The leaves are small and very dark purple and unlike many purple leaved trees the leaves remain dark throughout the entire season, until turning a brighter red in the autumn time before falling. Be aware that the twigs and leaves of cherry trees contain toxins that are harmful to people and animals. ![]() Trees are typically pruned as hedges as high as 20 feet, but unpruned they can reach heights of 40 feet. This tree has pretty single pink flowers that appear early in the spring and remain on the tree whilst the dark foliage begins to emerge, gradually fading to white and contrasting fantastically with the dark leaves. Red fruit ripens to an attractive dark purple. Prunus cerasifera Nigra is a dark leaved form of Cherry Plum which was popularly planted as a street tree in post war Britain. ![]()
